1976 Founding

Horizon Roofing and Sheet Metal was founded in 1976 by Dan Scepaniak. With the help of his family, what started out as a dream built in a Central Minnesota garage quickly turned into a booming business. For nearly 45 years, Horizon Roofing has been on a mission to serve the roofing industry with highly-qualified, uncompromising workmanship and service. We’ve come a long way in our nearly 45 years but make an effort to stay true to our family-owned roots.

Family Succession

In 2000, upon Dan’s retirement, his son, Kurt assumed the position of President and eventually became the sole owner. Since then, we’ve seen exceptional growth in our business, all while living out our core values and maintaining high ethics. Our commitment to both employees and customers alike, has created a new standard for service excellence and industry leadership in the commercial roofing field. We have built a reputation through our innovative, outside-the-box-thinking and throughout our tenure have earned many esteemed awards, no doubt, making us the winning team to work with.

Kurt Scepaniak


President/CEO

Kurt Scepaniak

Kurt Scepaniak is a second-generation owner of Horizon Roofing and has been working in the roofing industry his whole life. At the age of 10, Kurt began sweeping shop floors and by 12, he was spending summers on the roofing crew. Kurt later went on to start the company’s service division and before taking over the company in 2000 he was the lead foreman for roofing, sheet metal, and service. Inspired by his dad to work hard, Kurt has turned Horizon into the business we see today. His leadership has played a large part in growing our company, earning us high status in the roofing industry and nearly 60 awards. Kurt is passionate about promoting potential careers in construction and currently sits on the Project Build MN Board as the Education Chair. Additionally, Kurt sits on the advisory board for Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and is a former Associated Builders and Contractors MN/ND board member. Outside of Horizon, Kurt enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, skiing in Lutsen and scuba diving all over the world.

Robert Jodsaas


Vice President

Robert Jodsaas

Robert Jodsaas has been an influential part of our business for the past ten years. He initially came to Horizon to assume the role of General Manager and currently resides as our Vice President. Having worked in the roofing industry for more than two decades, Robert provides a large amount of value to our estimating and production departments. Prior to joining Horizon, he spent his years installing roofing systems and eventually had the opportunity to design systems nationwide for large clients like Wells Fargo and Macy’s. In his role today, his design background gives him the ability to walk an owner through the “why” of a roofing system and allows him to better explain that it’s not a one system fits all operation. Along with his complete knowledge of roofing systems and metals, Robert is great with numbers and spends hours digging into a project to provide the best value for our customers. Robert views honesty as the best policy, always owning up to his mistakes, which aligns directly with our company’s values. Robert is very competitive and enjoys competing at a high level in pool, darts, bowling, and golf. Outside of competitive sports, he enjoys being on the lake, doing DIY home projects and, as a single dad, spending time with his daughter who, in his words, is turning out better than he could have ever imagined.

Andy Peters


Roofing Estimator

Andy Peters

Andy Peters has been a member of the Horizon team for almost five years. He has 17 years of experience in the roofing industry, starting in high school as a roofer and sheet metal tech. Andy attended Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis and upon graduation made his way back to roofing, eventually becoming a service estimator. His strong and diverse background in the roofing industry has helped Andy excel with our clients. He truly cares about our customers and aims to give them the best value possible while working within their budget. Andy goes above and beyond to ensure his customers are satisfied with every facet of their project, from design to close out documentation. And, he’s sure to provide some laughs along the way! When he’s not making his customers laugh, Andy can be found on the links, hunting or at the campground with his family.

John Nelson


Roofing Estimator

John Nelson

John Nelson joined Horizon Roofing in 2017 and brings with him 14+ years of experience as a roofing estimator. He is a Magna Cum Laude graduate from MSU Mankato earning a B.S. degree in Construction Management. This, combined with his 20+ years of knowledge in the construction industry and passion to provide for his clients has made him a valued member of our team. John is a very detail-oriented estimator, priding himself on providing extreme value and creating long-lasting relationships. John is a sports enthusiast and most of the time can be found cheering on his kids at their various events or earning his status as Pearl Jam’s biggest fan.

Geoff Spah


Shingling & Siding Estimator

Geoff Spah

Geoff Spah came to Horizon Roofing in 2016 and has been instrumental in growing our large-scale shingling and siding department. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Since joining Horizon, Geoff has excelled with our customers and created a service standard that can’t be beaten. He takes on a personal approach and makes sure every client feels like a partner. Geoff takes his role in our projects very seriously to ensure long-standing relationships are made. As a problem solver by nature, Geoff enjoys a good challenge to showcase his abilities! Geoff is a CertainTeed Certified Shingle Master which allows us to offer a 25-year non-prorated material and labor warranty for commercial buildings when all CertainTeed products are used in conjunction with a lifetime rated shingle installation. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching his kid’s youth hockey teams, hanging out by the bonfire and spending time with his family.

Josh Henry


Shingling & Siding Estimator

Josh Henry

Josh Henry joined the Horizon Team in the fall of 2017. He is a graduate from Dunwoody College of Technology. For nearly two years, Josh has been a part of the estimating team, working hard to provide quality service to shingling and siding customers. Josh brings many strengths to the table including his eye for details and willingness to learn even if it doesn’t directly relate to his day-to-day responsibilities. Outside of the office, Josh likes to golf, play softball, go hiking, hang out with family friends and, as a North Carolina transplant, cheer on the Duke Blue Devils basketball team.

Project Manager

Josh Anderson

Josh Anderson recently joined Horizon, taking over as our lead Project Manager. Josh has a B.S. in Construction Management AND a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering. He has been working in the roofing industry for over ten years, both as a consultant and project manager. Throughout his career, Josh has successfully managed 500+ commercial roofing and sheet metal projects. He prides himself on having top-notch timely communication and problem-solving acumen, stating, “If I can’t fix it, I will find someone who will.” Most of Josh’s spare time is absorbed with his three daughters. Prior to having children, he spent a lot of time renovating his first home and hopes to do similar work on his new house once his kids are a little older. Josh is also a Certified Professional Contractor and still completes flat-work concrete projects every weekend in the summer!

Production Superintendent

Dan Schlien

Dan Schlien is new to Horizon but brings with him 16 years of commercial roofing experience. Dan started out his career in the field and quickly become a journeyman roofer and shortly after that a foreman. At Horizon, Dan is taking on a new role as production superintendent, leading crews to success. His experience in the field has served him well so far as he knows what his guys are going through and can truly understand their challenges. Dan is customer driven and always offers up great communication with our clients. When he’s not leading our teams to success, Dan is usually doing something outdoors and loves hunting, fishing or camping with his family.

Danny Terwey


Sheet Metal Superintendent

Danny Terwey

Danny Terwey started at Horizon in 2014 and is currently running our architectural sheet metal department. Danny grew up around the construction industry, mostly working for his dad in their family construction company. Danny went on to earn a degree in Mental Health and after working that avenue for eight years, decided it was time for a change.  In his five years at Horizon, Danny has filled many roles, including Sheet Metal Foreman and most recently Sheet Metal Superintendent. His past experiences in both construction and mental health helped Danny move up quickly and approach leadership head-on. In his position, Danny spends a lot of time focused on the customer and enjoys bringing their ideas to fruition. Always looking to become better, he is constantly learning and applying new skills and encouraging his crew to do the same. In his free time, Danny likes to hunt and fish as much as possible, however, lately that has taken a backseat to raise four great kids with his wife.

Art Taylor

Art Taylor

Filling a unique role in our company, Art Taylor is our full-time staff trainer. With 40+ years of experience in the roofing and construction industry, Art has more knowledge than almost everyone in our company. In his tenure, Art has worked on several multi-million dollar projects, including projects at the Mall of America. Certified by OSHA as a full-time production and safety trainer, Art’s mission in our company is to always put safety above profits. He works hard to continuously train new and existing employees to bring the highest quality workmanship to our customers. When he’s not in the training center, Art enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. 

Brad Kurr


Service Sales

Brad Kurr

Brad Kurr is one of our most tenured employees having worked for Horizon for nearly 20 years. After high school, Brad joined the US Navy, serving for a number of years before starting his career with us. Brad started out on the roofing production side and quickly made his way into the service department as one of our first service estimators. Brad is a known and trusted entity in our business, inspecting hundreds of buildings a year to help clients extend the lives of their roofs. When Brad isn’t on a rooftop, he’s usually spending time with his family traveling to various venues watching his kids compete with their horses or coaching their basketball teams.

Steve Ramerth


Service Sales

Steve Ramerth

Steve Ramerth joined our service department in early 2019 to help drive our expanding inspection and maintenance services. He is a graduate from the University of North Dakota where he studied sales and marketing. Before coming to Horizon, Steve worked in the roofing industry, primarily in the southern part of the United States, for five years. Starting out as a general laborer, Steve quickly worked his way up to superintendent and then on to service/production manager. At Horizon, Steve’s role is to provide our customers with extreme value, always taking care of their needs as if it were his own property. Steve brings to the table a team first attitude and is a creative problem solver. In his free time, Steve enjoys being outside, shooting hoops, spending days out on the links and traveling the world with his wife.

Jason Nelson


Service Manager

Jason Nelson

Jason Nelson has been with Horizon roofing since 2012, starting out as a senior service technician and currently working as our service manager. In total, Jason has 13 years of experience in the construction industry, specifically roofing. In addition, Jason was a member of the United States Army where he served as an NCO (Leader). His experience serving our country shaped Jason into the leader he is today. When it comes to leading his team and providing for our customers, Jason uses his previous experience in the field as a guide. By knowing what our techs go through on a day to day basis, he can provide stronger customer service and facilitate better relationships with our customers. When he’s not servicing our customers, Jason can be found riding his Harley or spending time with his wife and children.

Aaron Rosenthal


Service Superintendent

Aaron Rosenthal

Aaron Rosenthal has been with Horizon for two years, starting out as a Service Lead and recently stepping into the role of superintendent. Growing up, Aaron was taught the philosophy, “If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” This mentality and his nearly 30 years of experience in the construction trades, focusing primarily on exterior disciplines, has helped him excel at Horizon. To add to his credentials, throughout his years in the trades, Aaron has been certified in a plethora of material installation both in commercial and residential. Having been involved with customers since a very early age, Aaron has learned the importance of conflict resolution and solution finding. Rather than running away from potential issues, he sees them as opportunities to find solutions and create strong customer relationships. Outside of the roofing industry, Aaron enjoys making knives and other bladed weapons, finding that it’s been a natural fit with his construction skills. He is also a firm believer in community outreach and has done a variety of volunteer work, putting his skills to use helping others.

Ashley Swenson


Service Assistant/Scheduler

Ashley Swenson

Ashley recently joined our team as the friendly voice on the other line helping our customers receive the service they need in a timely and efficient manner. Ashley has been dispatching for seven years but is new to the world of commercial roofing. She brings a lot of great qualities to the table including her willingness to learn, extensive dispatch knowledge, friendly demeanor and her calm, cool and collective personality. When she’s not at work, you can most likely find Ashley in the kitchen as she loves to bake and is an amateur caterer! Additionally, Ashley enjoys spending time with her two kids, Stevie and McKenzie. 

Adam Bloch


Web Developer

Adam Bloch

Adam has been with Horizon for most of his career. With a degree in Application and Game Development, Adam joined our team in 2011 as our web developer. Adam works to develop and maintain our project management systems. Through his work, we have been able to provide our customers with better communication and keep them in the loop every step of the way during our time on their project. When Adam isn’t developing new platforms for our company, he’s usually camping and spending time with his family, coding random projects or games, playing board games and launching rockets.

Taylor Sellnow


Director of Experiences

Taylor Sellnow

Taylor joined our team in May 2018 as our Director of Experiences. She is a graduate from the University of St. Thomas and brings with her five years of marketing/ communications experience. Her role at Horizon is to ensure everyone who comes in contact with our company, whether it be customers or employees, experiences what makes Horizon so special. From day-to-day marketing, PR, event planning, and everything in between, she makes sure the Horizon brand shows through. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Tyler, and dalmatian, Floyd, long weekends at the lake with family and friends, checking out local breweries, going to concerts and summer nights on the patio.

Mollie Parks


Human Resources

Mollie Parks

Mollie came to Horizon in 2018 as our Human Resources Director. She is a 2008 graduate from U of M Moorhead where she earned a degree in accounting. Before coming to Horizon, Mollie worked in the transportation industry starting out in payroll and eventually moving into a more HR focused role. Since coming to Horizon, Mollie has helped boost our employee morale with her ability to empathize and resolve issues in a timely manner. Mollie loves horses and when the Minnesota weather allows for it she’s usually trail riding with her friends and family or spending time with her two children.

Jolene Wagner


Controller

Jolene Wagner

Jolene has been with Horizon since 2013 as the company Controller, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and industry experience. Not one to shy away from a challenge, she obtained her B.A. in less than three years and went on to earn a Masters of Business Administration becoming a Certified Public Accountant. Always striving to put the customer first, Jolene prides herself on being able to help answer all concerns in an effective manner. Outside of work she enjoys golfing, quilting and spending time with her family.

Heather Flood


Contract Administrator

Heather Flood

Heather has been with Horizon Roofing since July 2016 as our accounting admin. In her two years with Horizon, Heather has worn multiple hats and lends her 20 years of accounting/construction knowledge across multiple departments. Currently, Heather is our Contract Administrator working to ensure all of our projects are running with the proper waivers and additional paperwork is in place. Outside of the office, Heather enjoys being with her two pups, playing softball, cheering on the MN Twins and thrift shopping!
